How the car donation process works
Start with the 2-minute donation form or call Heritage
Begin by completing the quick online donation form for Maine Motors Giveback or by calling Heritage for the Blind directly. You will share basic details such as your name, pickup location, vehicle year, make, model, general condition, and whether you have the title. Donors from Portland’s West End, Deering Center, Lewiston, Auburn, Bangor, Scarborough, Waterville, and beyond can start the same way. You do not need to know the vehicle’s exact value or arrange transportation yourself. The intake step is designed to be simple, low-pressure, and easy to finish in about two minutes.
A coordinator calls within 1-2 business hours
After your form is submitted, a donation coordinator follows up, typically within 1-2 business hours, to confirm your vehicle information and help schedule pickup. This call is your chance to ask practical questions, including where the tow truck should meet you, what to do if the car does not run, and how to handle the title. The coordinator will work around your availability whenever possible, whether the vehicle is at your home, workplace, apartment lot, repair shop, driveway, camp, or storage location. The pickup is always free to the donor.
Your vehicle is picked up for free in Maine
A licensed tow truck is scheduled to arrive at your Maine pickup location. In most metro areas, including greater Portland, South Portland, Biddeford, Lewiston-Auburn, Bangor, and Augusta, same-day or next-business-day pickup is often available. Rural or island-adjacent locations may require a little more coordination, but the towing remains free. At pickup, you sign the title over according to the instructions provided by the coordinator. Please remove personal belongings, license plates if directed, and any toll passes before the driver arrives. You do not pay towing, handling, or processing fees.
The vehicle goes to auction or a parts reseller
Once picked up, your donated car, truck, SUV, van, motorcycle, or other accepted vehicle is transported to an appropriate sales channel. Depending on age, mileage, condition, and market demand, it may be offered through an auction or sold to a parts reseller. This step helps convert the vehicle into charitable proceeds without requiring you to repair, advertise, negotiate, or meet buyers. Even vehicles that are not running may still have value through resale or parts. Maine Motors Giveback keeps the donor experience simple while the professional handling process takes place after pickup.
Proceeds support Heritage for the Blind
After the vehicle is sold, the proceeds go to Heritage for the Blind, a recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, EIN 58-2164446. Heritage for the Blind supports services for people who are blind or visually impaired and also helps connect individuals with benefit resources. If you or someone you know wants to check eligibility for programs such as SSI, LIHEAP, Medicare Extra Help, Section 8, and other support options, you can visit nhftb.org/finder. Your Maine vehicle donation becomes a practical way to support a mission while clearing an unwanted vehicle from your property.
Your tax receipt is mailed after the vehicle sells
Once the sale is complete, your tax documentation is prepared and mailed. If the vehicle sells for more than $500, you will receive IRS Form 1098-C. If the vehicle sells for $500 or under, you will receive a written acknowledgment. The full donation process, from initial contact to mailed tax receipt, typically takes about 2-6 weeks, depending on scheduling, pickup timing, sale processing, and mail delivery. Keep your receipt with your tax records, and consult a qualified tax professional if you have questions about claiming a charitable deduction.
